It’s time for the final practice session at the Spanish Grand Prix, taking place at the brand-new Madring. Stay with us throughout the session as GPblog brings you the latest updates and exclusive insights straight from the Madrid paddock. After
George Russell set the pace in FP1 with a 1:34.077, his
Mercedes teammate
Kimi Antonelli responded by topping Friday’s second practice session in a 1:33.662. The 20-year-old finished ahead of
Ferrari duo
Charles Leclerc and
Lewis Hamilton, who drew the ire of several of his fellow drivers during the opening day of action.
It was a difficult day for
McLaren, with
Lando Norris only managing two laps at the Madring during FP2 before having to
swap out his MCL40’s gearbox. Meanwhile Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad was the first driver this weekend
to bring out the red flag - the 19-year-old lost the rear heading into Turn 13 and slid into the barriers, but thankfully emerged from the crash uninjured.
It was a quite surprise there was only one such incident during Friday’s action, with many fearing a daunting new task at the Madring, a semi-street circuit featuring tight, blind corners, close proximity to the walls, and huge elevation changes - including the 24% banked gradient at La Monumental.
