When F1 meets football: Verstappen links up with Real Madrid stars

Real Madrid's presence at the Madrid Grand Prix was no coincidence, with the Spanish football giants closely involved in the event as an official Local Event Supporter. The club's Valdebebas training complex sits alongside the northern section of Madring.

That close proximity also saw Real Madrid play a role throughout the Grand Prix weekend. Some of the club's facilities were incorporated into the organisation of the event, while Real Madrid was also represented within the hospitality areas at the circuit.

It was against that backdrop that Verstappen met several figures from Real Madrid before taking to the track for the Grand Prix. In a video published by Red Bull, the Dutchman can be seen crossing paths with a number of high-profile names, including Arda Guler, Denzel Dumfries, Eder Militao, Real Madrid's record signing Yan Diomande, Brahim Díaz and club legend Sergio Ramos.

The Dutchman also had the chance to chat with Mourinho, who returned to take charge of the club this season after previously managing Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013.

Unlike last year, however, the four-time world champion made it clear that a comeback will not materialise this time around. When asked whether he had any advice for Antonelli on keeping his emotions under control, or whether he would rather hold back in the hope of mounting a late challenge himself, Verstappen immediately dismissed the prospect of turning the championship around.

Instead, Verstappen was full of praise for Antonelli, whose victory in Madrid marked his eighth of the season. The Dutchman believes the Mercedes driver simply needs to continue doing what has brought him so much success so far, rather than worrying too much about the situation or allowing the pressure surrounding the championship fight to affect his approach.

Verstappen also highlighted Antonelli's confidence and the experience he continues to gain despite still being young and at a very early stage of his Formula 1 career. In his view, there is no reason for the Italian to overcomplicate matters when his current approach is already working, particularly given the strong group of people around him who understand what he needs.
