Richard Verschoor recently joined McLaren's driver development programme, as the Dutch driver completed his final season in Formula 2, after spending multiple years racing in the category. Speaking to various outlets, including GPblog, Verschoor spoke about signing with McLaren, and reflected on his time in F2.
“I think my career has gone a bit different than maybe how you’d hope it to go at the start. Of course, it was not my intention at the start, to stay in F2 for so long."
- Richard VerschoorVerschoor has endured several difficult situations throughout his motorsport career thus far, and has subsequently struggled to progress through to Formula One or any other category of motorsport. However, despite some difficult seasons in F2, Verschoor managed to score his best championship result in 2025, which was confirmed as his final season in the category.
Reflecting on his time in F2, Verschoor stated: “I think my career has gone a bit different than maybe how you’d hope it to go at the start. Of course, it was not my intention at the start, to stay in F2 for so long. I think a good example is straight away the first season, where I wanted to do F2 but after 16 races, I got kicked out because the budget was gone."
He continued: "From there, that’s how my F2 career went. Every race, for the first 2-3 years, I didn’t know if I would make the next one, or what would happen if I picked up any damage. It was not a very nice way to drive. If I would do it all over again, I would try a different way, but on the other hand, I learned a lot from that and I think I’m even more motivated because of it."

Verschoor's best championship result in F2 came in 2025, where he finished third in the standings, taking four wins across Feature and Sprint races. The 24-year old completed five seasons in F2, and also managed to claim at least one victory in every season.
Speaking on if he achieved his goals in F2, Verschoor said: "The main focus was to win the championship, and we didn’t manage it, so I wouldn’t say I’ve exceeded any expectations. You want to win and we did fight for it, that was the goal. So I’m proud that this year I could show my true potential, because I feel like the last 2-3 years, I couldn’t, for different reasons."
Following the conclusion of his time in F2,
Verschoor will now be working closely with McLaren, after joining their driver development programme.
When asked about joining McLaren and how it came about, Verschoor stated: "It’s been a while, driving in the junior categories, and I’m very happy to take on the next step with McLaren. Very proud to be on board with them, there’s many opportunities within McLaren where I can develop myself as a driver."
He added: "After Jeddah, I decided to walk to Zak {Brown}, and that’s when things kickstarted. I’m not sure if that helped in the end, I think it did, because at that time we didn’t get to a point where we could work together. Then later on in the year, around Baku, is when the contact was there again, and from there we started speaking. They said that they would like to consider me as their driver, and to be honest it was quite late {in the season}, that I signed the contract. It was a nerve-wracking few months, but very happy of course."
