Alpine will not have been too happy with Fernando Alonso when it became clear that he would not be renewing his contract with the French team, but team principal Otmar Szafnauer is not considering replacing the two-time world champion any time soon.
The Spanish newspaper El Confidencial sketches a scenario in which it might be advisable for Alpine to get a driver who will also take place in the car next year. This driver can then get used to the car for six months and be ready to race in 2023. Szafnauer, however, does not want to know anything about this.
"Absolutely not," said the Alpine chief. "Why not? Fernando is a great driver, he performs at a very high level, he is one of the best assets we have. Fernando and Esteban Ocon score points every weekend. And that's what can make us beat McLaren ." Alpine is currently fourth in the constructors' championship battle with 99 points. However, the difference with McLaren is minimal with nine Grands Prix to go: four points.

Who will replace Alonso?

Alpine has been linked with several drivers. Mick Schumacher is a name we often see in the rumour mill, but Daniel Ricciardo might be the best candidate. Pierre Gasly is also a good option for Alpine because of his French nationality, but they will have to buy out the 26-year-old driver's contract at AlphaTauri.
