Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsport, but not everyone agrees with that. Peter Aleshin, boss of the Russian SMP Racing, thinks Formula 1 is more of a theatre show than a sport.

Big name

SMP Racing is a big name in motorsport. The team is active in several categories of the sport and most famous of the World Endurance Championship. They also sponsor former Formula 1 driver Sergey Sirotkin, who competed for Williams in 2018.

Theatre show

Peter Aleshin tells Sportbox that he is not a fan of Formula 1 in its current form. "In my personal opinion this is the class with the smallest sports component. It's more of a show. Yes, many of the drivers are at a very high level, but since the resources of the teams are so different, it is not necessary to talk about a serious competition."

"You can only talk seriously about rivalry within teams. for example, it will be very interesting if Carlos Sainz can prove himself at Ferrari", says Aleshin. According to the Russian, the teams are not daring enough to each other. Also the Russian does not expect major changes until Formula 1 changes radically and there are standard cars.
