Mercedes 'compression ratio track' saga over as Monaco GP change comes into force

Starting from the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix weekend, the hotly-debated compression ratio 'trick' will officially be banned. One of the hottest topics of the pre-season, the issue attracted so much attention that it ultimately prompted the FIA to change the rules.

What was the Mercedes compression ratio 'trick'?

Under the 2026 regulations, the maximum permitted compression ratio - the ratio between the cylinder's volume when the piston is at the bottom of its stroke and when it is at the top, a key factor in determining combustion efficiency - was reduced from 18:1 to 16:1, with FIA checks initially carried out only when the engine was at ambient temperature.
Since a higher compression ratio generally translates into greater combustion efficiency and increased power output, rival teams suspected Mercedes had found a way to regain some of the performance lost under the new rules. While the exact lap-time advantage was never publicly quantified, estimates varied widely throughout the paddock.
The debate quickly split opinion throughout the paddock. Some rivals argued that Mercedes had crossed the line and developed a solution that went against the spirit of the regulations, while others viewed it as a clever piece of engineering that simply exploited a loophole within the rulebook's grey areas. Such interpretations have long been part of Formula 1's DNA, with several of the sport's most famous innovations - both historic and more recent - born from teams finding creative ways to maximise what the regulations allowed.

In the end, however, the debate has now been put to rest. From 1 June onwards, power units will no longer be assessed solely at ambient temperature, with the FIA also introducing tests at 130°C.
"A significant effort has been invested in finding a solution to the topic of compression ratio, This parameter, which was one of the key fundamental targets of these regulations in order to attract newcomers to the sport, is limited in the regulations to 16:1, measured in cold conditions. The FIA has worked to find a compromise solution which determines that the compression ratio will be controlled in both hot and cold conditions from 1 June 2026, and subsequently only in the operating conditions (130deg C) from 2027 onwards,” the FIA stated at the time.
Wolff subsequently downplayed the significance of the regulation change, suggesting that even if the figures being discussed were accurate, he could understand why rival teams had pushed for clarification. The Mercedes boss insisted the amendment would have little impact on the team's competitiveness either way, adding that the outfit ultimately supported the change in the interest of maintaining a constructive approach within the sport.
“If these numbers would have been true, I absolutely understand why somebody would fight it, but eventually, it's not worth the fight. It doesn't change anything for us, whether we stay like this or whether we change to the new regulations, and that's been a process. But we also want to be good citizens in the sport because it doesn't make a big difference. We then changed opinion.”

In Monaco, it will still be virtually impossible to determine whether Mercedes actually gained any meaningful advantage during the opening five races of the season, or whether the revised testing procedures will have any noticeable impact on the team's engine performance from the Principality onwards.
