Verstappen's future increasingly clear: F1 exit in 2027 more likely than a move to McLaren

A move by Max Verstappen to McLaren is not entirely ruled out, but it does not appear likely in the short term. The odds are greater that the Dutchman will remain with Red Bull Racing or temporarily put his Formula 1 career on hold after this season, GPblog understands after numerous conversations with those involved.
At the start of the week, the Formula 1 world was abuzz with paddock rumours that Verstappen was in negotiations with McLaren. These rumours were substantial enough for this site to report on them. But as the week has progressed, more and more sources in Formula 1 say that, in their view, a transfer to the British team is not realistic in the short term.
GPblog understands that, at the request of the Dutch camp, talks have indeed been held with McLaren’s leadership; between CEO Zak Brown and Verstappen individually, and between the American and the management of the four-time world champion. Brown is said to have hinted that a collaboration with Verstappen is an option, but only in the longer term. He has also indicated that a deal for 2027 should not be expected.

Verstappen camp remains silent

The fact that Verstappen’s entourage nevertheless refuses to publicly state that he will not go to McLaren is seen by some in Formula 1 as a way to keep pressure on Red Bull. By keeping the prospect of a move to a rival on the table, Red Bull could be forced into concessions; for example financially, but also to ensure that the team takes Verstappen’s concerns about the project even more seriously.
That one conversation is not enough to restore Verstappen’s trust in the team, something all of Formula 1 notices. Sources therefore seriously consider two outcomes: staying with Red Bull after all or sitting out 2027 - and perhaps returning to the sport a year later with, for example, McLaren. At Mercedes and Ferrari, as at McLaren, there are no opportunities next season.

Verstappen can wait a long time

It is also expected that Verstappen will not make a decision within a few days about what to do in 2027. Why would he? After all, contractually speaking, the Dutchman can wait until mid-October to make the call. In the meantime, Red Bull can demonstrate that it is taking all his concerns about the team’s future seriously. That could be quite a challenge for the Austrians, with, for instance, the impending departure of Paul Monaghan - one of the last remaining members of the old guard.
In the coming months, Verstappen will also have the chance to see whether an improvement in the car’s quality is indeed on the horizon. No one expects a turnaround like last year, but a step toward consistently fighting for podiums might be possible. That could be what makes the difference for Verstappen between staying or stopping. More realistic alternatives do not seem to be available for the time being.
