Imola may host the Qatar or Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Formula 1 is busy reshaping the calendar for the remainder of the season due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Last Sunday, it was confirmed that the championship will travel to Malaysia during the first weekend of October, with the race set to be contested under the name 'Bahrain Grand Prix' despite taking place around 6,000 kilometres away from the Middle Eastern country.

The Sepang International Circuit is eager to host Formula 1 but has limited financial resources available. As Bahrain is unable to stage the event because of the conflict, the country has decided to become the title sponsor. That way, Bahrain remains in the spotlight for Formula 1 fans, even though no racing will actually take place there.

Due to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran, it remains uncertain whether Formula 1 will be able to travel to Qatar and Abu Dhabi at the end of the season. At the moment, such a scenario would be difficult, especially in light of the negative travel advisories several countries have issued for Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. It is currently impossible to guarantee the safety of F1 personnel.

Formula One Management (FOM) is actively considering alternatives should Qatar and Abu Dhabi need to be removed from the 2026 calendar. Initially, Portimao was considered as a replacement, but the circuit’s owners would prefer to complete track modifications before hosting the Portuguese Grand Prix in 2027.

Imola is being seriously considered to host a race on the final weekend of November. GPblog has heard that the Italians have also considered a partnership with a Middle Eastern country, which would help reduce costs for the circuit. Although such branding is reportedly unlikely in this case, it has not been completely ruled out either.

In any case, FOM must first decide where any replacement Grands Prix for the Middle East rounds would take place. Undoubtedly, there are more contenders than just Imola.
