Max Verstappen will lose his right-hand man, Gianpiero Lambiase, at Red Bull Racing. The race engineer is set to join McLaren in 2028, GPblog can confirm. Lambiase will leave once his current contract expires at the end of 2027. The Brit has accepted a multi-million offer from the Woking-based
Formula 1 team, where he will take up a senior role from 2028.
Verstappen to lose Lambiase at Red Bull Racing
For Verstappen, it marks a significant loss. Lambiase has been the Dutchman’s race engineer since 2016 and played a key role in his four world titles. Within Red Bull, he also serves as Head of Racing.
Lambiase’s departure adds to a series of high-profile exits at Red Bull. Adrian Newey, Jonathan Wheatley and Helmut Marko have all left, while Christian Horner was replaced by Laurent Mekies. The team is once again losing a key figure from its successful era.
For Verstappen, it brings an end to a long-standing partnership. The bond between driver and engineer is very strong, with Lambiase previously stating he would not want to work with another driver in that role. Verstappen, in turn, has also made clear he would not want to continue without Lambiase.
