There is seemingly a single slot where one of the previously cancelled races in the Middle East, Bahrain or Saudi Arabia, could be rescheduled given there is a lasting truce, GPblog understands. In the latest episode of our F1 Paddock Update podcast, Ben Hunt and Jim Kimberley also discussed the possibility of further changes to the current calendar.

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali told L'Équipe that the competition has an emergency plan. "I don't want to go into detail on that. Whether it's about the end of the season or potentially replacing one or both races: the decision will be made in the coming months, when the right moment has come. To be honest, I think it will be impossible to replace both races. Even replacing one will already be difficult. There aren't many free dates available.
"I can confirm that we have a contingency plan. And if the two end-of-year races cannot take place because the war is not over, we will have other alternatives."

GPblog understands that if the competition still wants to slot in the Bahrain or Saudi Arabian Grand Prix somewhere, it will happen between Baku and Singapore. However, a single condition has to be met before Formula 1 goes to the Middle East. There needs to be a full and lasting truce between the United States and Iran.

Saudi Arabian or Bahrain GP: Which race makes more sense to recover?

With the prospect of recovering both races now effectively off the table, attention has shifted towards the possibility of bringing back just one of the two cancelled events. Unlike Jeddah, Sakhir is a permanent circuit, and the nature of the 2026 regulations also favour Bahrain. Jeddah would place the new-generation cars under far greater energy-management stress, as its long full-throttle sections and limited heavy-braking zones could make it significantly more susceptible to super-clipping than Sakhir. On the other hand, the commercial benefits of bringing Jeddah back onto the schedule could prove more attractive from Formula 1's perspective.

What about the Qatar and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix?

If the situation between the US and Iran is not resolved, Formula 1 may have to look for alternatives, as Domenicali pointed out. In the video, Ben Hunt and Jim Kimberley also discussed which circuit they would like to see host two races this year, sharing their views on Interlagos, the Circuit of the Americas and Australia.
