Toto Wolff says
Mercedes and
Red Bull "are in a better place" than rivals
Ferrari because of the tyre strategy the Italians have picked.
Charles Leclerc will start the
Austrian Grand Prix from pole position on the softs while Mercedes and Red Bull run the medium compound.
The Mercedes team boss believes the soft tyre choice is "risky". The tyres which each driver sets their fastest lap on in Q2 are used to start the race with and Leclerc used the softs. He put on the mediums in Q1.
"I think that Charles starting on the soft is a risky strategy. Because it is either a two-stop if things go bad tomorrow, or you're very compromised towards the end of your first stint," Wolff told
Autosport.
"Whereas Red Bull or Mercedes on the medium are in a better place in terms of the strategies available to us."
