FIA want to prevent 'Mercedes like engine lead' in 2026

The FIA want to prevent a team from having a big lead with the new engine regulations that come into effect in 2026. They are looking closely at the situation, as is Nikolas Tombazis. Mercedes had by far the strongest power unit when the last major engine change was introduced in 2014.

Nikolas Tombazis of the FIA's Single Seater Commission is alert and wants to rule out a big lead for one team. "We obviously don't want to start that season with huge controversy. Last time, we had it pretty good. Since then, we have learned a bit more, and we can make sure we can avoid any kind of controversy,'' Tombazis told Autosport.com. Writing the rules, then, was another sticking point last time. Those rules caused all teams to have their own views regarding them. That is also why the cost cap was introduced.

In 2014, the hybrid engine was introduced. There was a switch from the V8 to a V6 engine. Mercedes managed to capitalise on this very well, ending with a run of seven constructors' and drivers' championships won. Preventing another such situation is now the FIA's priority.
