Villeneuve brutally tears apart Ocon’s F1 career despite strong Baku result

Ahead of the Baku weekend, Ocon admitted that his future in Formula 1 remains uncertain, despite subsequently securing a strong points finish at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Speaking to media including GPblog, the Haas driver confirmed that he currently considers himself a free agent for next season.

He also revealed that discussions with other teams are taking place, although he stopped short of providing any details about his options. The Frenchman insisted that some factors surrounding his future are beyond his control, but made clear that he intends to continue pushing until the end of the season before seeing where the situation leaves him.

Present in Baku for Sky Sports, Villeneuve was asked whether Ocon’s performance at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix could persuade Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu to reconsider his position regarding the Frenchman’s future. However, the former F1 World Champion offered a blunt assessment, suggesting that Ocon’s pace is only one part of the equation when it comes to deciding his future with the team.

Villeneuve pointed to the wider dynamics within Haas and the potential availability of other drivers, while arguing that Ocon has already enjoyed a lengthy career in Formula 1. In his view, the Frenchman has had plenty of time to establish himself at the highest level, but his career has ultimately produced relatively few results.

Despite growing speculation surrounding his future and strong criticism from Jacques Villeneuve, Esteban Ocon has made it clear that he remains confident in his own ability. Following his eighth-place finish at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, his best result of the 2026 season, the Haas driver highlighted his record across the junior categories and insisted that he has consistently been able to compete at the front throughout his career.

Ocon pointed to his experience of racing against many of the drivers currently on the F1 grid, arguing that he has regularly matched them on pace. He also referenced his victories in Formula Renault and his karting championships as evidence of his ability to succeed. The Frenchman then made his assessment of his own level particularly clear, stating that he considers himself one of the best drivers in the field and is not afraid to say so.

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix represented a significant turnaround after a difficult start to the weekend. Ocon saw his qualifying session compromised by a yellow flag, leaving him down in 14th place despite believing he had the potential to reach Q3.

The race itself proved far more positive, with the Haas driver avoiding the incidents around the Baku City Circuit to climb into eighth place. The result ended a points drought stretching back to the Monaco Grand Prix in June and marked only Ocon’s third top-ten finish of the season.
