The 2024 Canadian Grand Prix was filled with two identical pole times, two safety cars, five DNFs and a very hard-earned win from Max Verstappen. Read below for a recap before we head into the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix race week. For last year's qualifying session, both
George Russell and Verstappen had the same time. The Briton started on pole with Verstappen in second. This was because Russell had set his time first. Behind the two of them was
Lando Norris.
At the beginning of the race, most drivers were on intermediate tires due to the wet track. However, it did not stay that way for long.
On lap 17, Verstappen made a mistake. The Red Bull driver went straight ahead in the last chicane. Only five laps later on 21/70, Norris was able to pass Verstappen and chase after Russell, who he passed on the next lap.
Logan Sargeant brought out the first safety car after a spin. As Noris had already passed the pit lane, he had to go around another lap. This meant that Verstappen and Russell moved ahead of him once again.
No competition for Verstappen as Norris battles Russell
During their pitstop, Verstappen, Russell, Norris, and Oscar Piastri all put on intermediate tyres. After the safety car came in, the rain started back up.
Charles Leclerc, who was already having engine issues, pitted for hard tyres believeing that the rain would stop soon. However, it did not. He had to pit once again for inters. Shortly after that, his then teammate Carlos Sainz, had a minor collision with Pierre Gasly, causing damange to his car.
Verstappen maintained the lead, minus his pitstop, for the rest of the race while others battled it out behind him. He was able to stay in control as both Ferraris, Alexander Albon, and Sergio Perez had last-minute DNFs.
In the end it was Verstappen on the top step of the podium with Norris 3.8 seconds behind him. Russell was able to fend off Lewis Hamilton for a well-earned third place with only 0.5 seconds between the two.
Who will win the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix?
While Verstappen has won the Canadian Grand Prix the past three years in a row, the McLaren drivers are highly competitive and have the car to beat. If Verstappen is able to win, he will beat
Michael Schumacher's record of three consecutive wins.
