Alfa Romeo started the 2019 F1 season as serious contenders for the 'best of the rest' position. But apart from the odd race, Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi's results tailed off in the second half of the year. Eventually, they only finished ahead of Haas and Williams in the F1 constructors' championship.
Not much is changing over the winter break. For Alfa Romeo, in particular, it's extremely quiet. Hardly any driver changes. No rule changes. No tyre changes. Despite this, boss Fred Vasseur has said the team will build a completely new car for 2020.
"We are building a completely new car. We will see how it goes, but I think we have a good foundation for the coming season. We have to improve on the basis of what we learned last year. By understanding precisely why we sometimes lagged behind the facts," Vasseur told Sport in Poland.
Other than the car, the only thing changing for Alfa Romeo is on the test bench. Robert Kubica comes in as a test driver for the team. The polish driver will be on the simulator and will be putting in the laps over the winter to ensure the new car is ready.
