Vasseur: "Finally a weekend where bad luck didn't stand in the way"

Ever since the beginning of the season Alfa Romeo has been close to points. Antonio Giovinazzi and Kimi Raikkonen always finished in eleventh and twelfth place, but in Monaco they finally scored their first point.

At the front of the rear

Since Sauber switched to Alfa Romeo in 2019, the team has consistently finished eighth in the championship. Raikkonen and Giovinazzi, also both drivers for the team since 2019, were mostly at the back of the midfield.
In terms of points, however, the team is going backwards. In 2019, 57 points were still scored, in 2020 only eight. After five races, the team is on one point since Monaco thanks to Giovinazzi who managed a fine tenth place after also qualifying handsomely in tenth.

Confidence in the team

That one point was especially good for the confidence in the team, also acknowledges team boss Frederic Vasseur. "We go to the next race full of confidence in our team, our car and our chances," he said in a press release. "Scoring a point in Monaco was important, especially from a psychological point of view, because we finally had a weekend where bad luck didn't get in the way of our progression."
So that progression is there according to Vasseur and he had actually hoped for more in Monaco. "We are still a bit disappointed because we know we could have finished even higher, but this shows how much potential we still have." Next weekend in Baku he hopes to continue this line. "We want to at least get through to Q2, drive another good race and hopefully bring home a strong result."
