Timo Glock wouldn't find it too strange if Max Verstappen were to move to Mercedes, saying that all these rumours are in motion "for a reason". The future of Max Verstappen in the pinnacle of motorsport has been a major topic of conversation in recent months. Although the Dutchman is still under contract with Red Bull for the coming years, he is regularly linked with a move to the Mercedes team, despite GPblog reporting that Verstappen
will stay loyal in 2026 and continue to race for the Austrian team.
George Russell stirred the pot earlier this weekend, suggesting in Austria that he
hasn't been able to sign a new contract due to Mercedes' interest in Verstappen, as the team reportedly wants to be sure the four-time world champion is truly not an option.
Plenty of rumours continue to swirl around regarding the future of both Max Verstappen and George Russell, with the two drivers creating their own rivalry on track.
Glock sees the benefit of a Mercedes move
According to Glock, Mercedes might already have a significant lead in power unit development for 2026 over
Red Bull Racing, hence his belief that a move for Verstappen may be the right thing to do.
“Verstappen wants a car that can compete for the world championship in the future,” said Glock on Sky Sports.
“Next year brings new engine regulations. From what we hear, Mercedes is in a very good position in this respect and has a clear advantage over the rest. At Mercedes, there is a lot of confidence and self-belief in the new engine.”
Red Bull have struggled with their cars in both 2024 and 2025, with the RB21 that Verstappen is behind the wheel of this campaign becoming a troublesome drive.
"Verstappen knows the state of his team regarding engine development,” continued Glock.
“His goal is to drive a competitive car. Therefore, there are various reasons. Last year, a switch was already somewhat in the making. Jos Verstappen and Toto Wolff were often seen together. The rumour mill is in motion for a reason."
