Andrea Stella has confirmed that McLaren's development focus has moved to next year's car. The MCL40 will now only get updates that were already approved before the switch. The McLaren team principal made the admission after a third pointless weekend of 2026 at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Just days before the race, McLaren CTO Rob Marshall said the team had no plans to ease off MCL40 development while wins were still possible, as

McLaren backed for biggest Baku upgrade that could shape the team's season.
After Baku, eight races remain in the 2026 season but for the reigning world champions, the rest of this year's campaign will be run largely on parts released several weeks ago.
Stella: all efforts already on next year's car
Stella said some new components are still on their way to the current car, but made clear where the factory's resources now go.
There's a tail of parts that will land trackside, so we will see still some new parts coming to the MCL40. But at the moment, as we speak, all the efforts are already concentrated onto next year's car, and what we see coming trackside is the result of parts being released a few weeks ago.
- Andrea Stella,Baku exposed 'fundamental limitations'
Stella said the problems at the Baku City Circuit went deeper than bad luck. He called it "a very frustrating Saturday" and said McLaren "paid some fundamental limitations of our package in this kind of circuit".
But at the same time, mainly we were not fast enough in the straights, and this continuously exposed our drivers to being attacked and having to spend their race pretty much watching the mirrors rather than thinking at how they can progress in the race.
- Andrea Stella,According to Stella, no single factor explains the straight-line deficit. He listed the car's aerodynamic drag and the choice of gear ratios for a high top-speed track, and said a comparison with Mercedes' data showed McLaren's power unit "was not optimised" in the race, even though the team got close to its full potential in qualifying.
There was some good news however. A new aerodynamic package, which targeted slow-corner performance, worked as the team expected. Stella expects replacements for the upgraded parts damaged in Norris's crash to be ready for the next races.
What it means for Norris and the constructors' fight
Stella admitted that Baku was one of the toughest weekends of Norris's year. He also said most of the blame lies with the team and the car, not the driver.
I would say that for Lando, this was one of the most difficult events in general that he has experienced in 2026, something that we need to take away, looking at whatever can be improved.
- Andrea Stella,Norris is fourth in the drivers' standings on 186 points - 116 points behind championship leader Kimi Antonelli, who has 302 points.
With McLaren's resources now on 2027, the defending champion has little reason to expect the MCL40 to close that gap.
The team standings look similar. ScuderiaFans reports that Ferrari have 378 points to McLaren's 306, while Red Bull have moved up to 263 after a double podium in Baku.

In the team's official post-race comments, Stella was more upbeat. He said McLaren sees Baku "as a one-off circuit" and looks ahead "with optimism", with Malaysia next on the calendar.
