McLaren team boss Andreas Seidl has admitted he is not concerned about whether the team made the right decision to switch from a Honda engine to Renault. The Japanese manufacturer made their return to Formula 1 back in 2015 when they partnered with
McLaren.
But the two parted ways from their cooperation at the end of 2017 after a few seasons of struggle and issues, with McLaren opting to use
Renault as their engine supplier.
After Honda were dropped by McLaren they made a deal to supply engines to
Toro Rosso from the 2018 season and proved themselves enough for
Red Bull to use them this year, ultimately being successful winning the Austrian Grand Prix with Max Verstappen.
Seidl was happy for Honda with their first win in 13 years but is focused on the job with McLaren’s partnership with Renault.
Seidl said (quote by
PlanetF1):
“It’s great to see a new winner in Formula 1, not just for Honda but for Formula 1 as a whole. “To be honest, that’s before my time so it’s not my concern.“I’m dealing with the team’s current situation and the future, so I’ll refrain from commenting.
“We are pleased with our partnership with Renault, because the chassis and the engine are working together very well.
“Renault did a great job in the winter and now there are no questions about the engine.”
McLaren have seen some of their best success in the past couple of races with
Lando Norris qualifying fifth and finishing sixth and
Carlos Sainz in eighth in Austria.
