Laurent Mekies is not concerned about Max Verstappen leaving Red Bull Racing, stressing that the Dutchman remains a crucial part of the Milton Keynes-based outfit's project. As a result, he sees little significance in the meeting between Jos Verstappen and Toto Wolff. After Max Verstappen's father, Jos,
was pictured in the paddock speaking to Mercedes CEO and team principal Wolff, the Dutchman's future at Red Bull Racing once again became a hotly-discussed topic.
Mekies reflects on Jos Verstappen-Toto Wolff meeting
Reflecting on the meeting between Mercedes team principal Wolff and the father of four-time
F1 world champion, Mekies says there is little significance behind it. He began:
"I tell you what, as much as it may sound exciting to see that from the outside, I really don't think there is an intention particular behind. If any of these guys wants to have a chat, it's going to be a story anyway. "So we speak all the time with Max and with Jos. And it's completely natural that they can have a conversation with Toto. Max was racing in a Mercedes last week in a GT3. So I don't think it's part of a game plan to get a message or another through," the Red Bull Racing team principal added.
Mekies not worried about Verstappen leaving Red Bull Racing
Mekies does not believe Verstappen is on his way out of the team. The Frenchman explained: "Look, no, I'm not concerned with Max following 'GP' there (to McLaren, ed.). We always have this joke, you know, we are not going to ask Max every week if he's going to stay.
"So Max is telling us he's happy at Red Bull. He's involved in every strategic decisions we are making. He's at the heart of the project. He's pushing with us. And we both want the same thing, getting back to a more competitive package, and he's central to that," he concluded.
