Sergio Perez has admitted he had little confidence in Racing Point's 2018 challenger. Despite beating teammate Esteban Ocon in the championship, the Mexican claimed he struggled to find the right balance in his car.
Perez, who will have a new teammate in 2019 with the arrival of Lance Stroll, lost 16-5 in the qualifying battle with Ocon. Overall, he picked up 13 more points than the Mercedes junior driver in a reversal of results on Sundays.
"I think the results are clear, he [Ocon] was the better one in qualifying, although the margin was extremely small," Perez told Autosport.
"It is less than a tenth between us in qualifying, and I was better in the races. I got the most points and also the better results. I didn't feel very confident this year with the car, to be honest, I had a hard time balancing the car all year long, but I did manage to get the most out of it in the race."
The former McLaren driver had a busy year outside the cockpit. He sent the team into administration, which eventually led to more money being pumped in. This was reflected on track with a fifth-place finish in Belgium.
