Oscar Piastri finished 34 seconds behind Lando Norris at the Barcelona Grand Prix and has no answers as to behind his considerable lack of pace compared to his McLaren teammate. Norris took advantage of
Kimi Antonelli's late retirement to finish on the podium for just the second time this season. The 2025 champion, despite not being in the battle for the victory, showed strong pace and only finished four seconds behind second-placed George Russell.
Piastri finished fifth but was only on for a seventh placed finish before the late retirements to both Antonelli and Leclerc. The Australian, who led for the majority of the 2025 championship, was considerably off the pace, finishing over half a minute behind Norris, and 18 seconds behind next-best Max Verstappen in fourth.
Oscar Piastri surprised by Barcelona GP struggles
Speaking after the race, Piastri admitted that he was bemused by his lack of pace and does not have any answers behind the cause of his struggles in Barcelona.
He told the media including GPBlog: "No, not really. I was trying a lot of different things and running into a lot of different problems. So I think just struggling a lot with grip, tyre life obviously. So I don't have any answers at the moment. I'm sure there will be some answers later. But yeah, I was surprised to struggle so much.
"Lando in the race was able to challenge the Mercedes. I think clearly Ferrari have taken a big step forward this weekend, even without the upgrades they had. You know, they've always been incredibly quick in the corners. I think on a day like today, where you need that downforce and that grip to protect the tyres, I think it was a big advantage today.
"So, I think it's all perfectly explainable. Just we're always lacking that last tenth or two, or in my case today, a lot more than that. You know, when you're trying to chase that last little bit, things are a bit uncomfortable. We need to put the car in a place it doesn't always like to be, and that comes with some challenges."
