Michael Schumacher’s 1994 F1 title gets Netflix documentary with Corinna Schumacher taking part

Schumacher ’94 – 'The Birth of a Legend' will be released worldwide on Netflix on October 2, 2026, returning to the season in which Schumacher claimed his first Formula 1 World Championship.

The feature-length documentary will focus exclusively on 1994, when Schumacher was just 25 years old and transformed himself from a promising Benetton driver into a world champion and one of Germany’s biggest sporting stars.

Schumacher began the campaign with victory in Brazil and ultimately secured the championship at the controversial season finale in Adelaide, where he finished one point ahead of Williams driver Damon Hill.

Between those two races came a year filled with sporting triumph, controversy and tragedy.

The 1994 season was overshadowed by the deaths of Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna at Imola, while Schumacher and Benetton were also caught up in allegations surrounding the legality of the team's car and its performance.

Netflix's new film will therefore revisit much more than Schumacher's championship success.

Corinna Schumacher will provide a personal perspective on the period, including the beginnings of her relationship with Michael. The couple were together during the 1994 season before marrying the following year.

Her involvement is particularly notable given how closely the Schumacher family has guarded Michael's privacy since his serious skiing accident in 2013.

She will be joined by a collection of figures who were closely connected to Schumacher during the defining season, including former Benetton team principal Flavio Briatore, former Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, David Coulthard, Schumacher's former manager Willi Weber and television personalities Kai Ebel and Heiko Waßer.

Their recollections will help paint a picture of Schumacher away from the statistics and championship standings, as the documentary examines both his uncompromising approach on the circuit and his personality away from racing.

The film will also explore the beginnings of what became known as “Schumi Mania” in Germany.

Schumacher's emergence as a national sporting hero was one of the defining cultural stories of the 1990s. His success helped turn Formula 1 into a huge mainstream attraction in Germany, with the Benetton driver's popularity exploding as his championship campaign gathered pace.

That makes the documentary potentially appealing well beyond the traditional Formula 1 audience.

The project is being produced by LEONINE Documentaries and will stream globally and exclusively on Netflix from October 2.

It also represents the latest chapter in Netflix's growing relationship with Formula 1 and follows the platform's 2021 documentary Schumacher, which was produced with the support of the Schumacher family.

This time, however, the story has a much tighter focus.

Rather than attempting to tell the story of Schumacher's entire career, Schumacher ’94 – The Birth of a Legend will concentrate on the extraordinary 12 months that turned a 25-year-old driver into a Formula 1 world champion — and changed his life forever.
