Team principal Andrea Stella believes McLaren are getting the "best version" of Oscar Piastri ever since his F1 debut despite suffering several early setbacks in 2026. The Aussie driver failed to start the first two races of the season, after a reconnaissance lap crash in Melbourne and electrical failure in Shanghai, but bounced back with a strong P2 finish in Japan last weekend.
Piastri was arguably unlucky to miss out on the win in Japan, taking the early lead and staying there whilst looking reasonably comfortable ahead of Mercedes and Ferrari before the Safety Car was brought out on Lap 22 following Ollie Bearman's crash.
For McLaren boss Stella, Piastri's performance at Suzuka was evidence that he is performing at his best level yet in F1, having led the Drivers' standings for most of 2025 and narrowly losing to teammate
Lando Norris.

After the Grand Prix, Stella told media: "Despite Oscar not having started the two main races at the start of the 2026 season, based on what we have seen in testing, in practice, in qualifying, based on his overall attitude and mental strength, I think we are seeing the best version of Oscar, the strongest Oscar since he's been in F1.
"I think, finally, he has had an opportunity to demonstrate it and he has done it in its full extent.
"Having gone through two races especially if we think the home race where you are not in condition to start for a situation that was completely avoidable, it can really bog you down."
Instead, Stella highlighted Piastri's ability to lead the Woking-based team through their difficult start, giving McLaren a much needed boost to help deliver a race-winning car in 2026.
"If anything I think we've seen his steadiness, his strength and strength that he has been able to pass on to the team, because the team gets a lot of inspiration from from the charismatic leadership that the drivers can offer and that's been definitely a boost for the entire team to go through the adversities.
"So really well done to Oscar for the way he's been facing this start of the season and now it's a responsibility of McLaren and the team to offer Lando and Oscar once again a car that can compete for victories."
McLaren surprised themselves with Suzuka outing, Stella reveals
The Italian boss also reflected on McLaren's strong performance in Suzuka, revealing a certain level of surprise within the team that a race win was actually on the cards.
"I think we are surprised ourselves, honestly, that we were in condition to win.
"I think if we want to be in this condition in the future consistently, we will have to improve the chassis by a few tenths of a second.
"And that's the aim that we have in relation to bringing upgrades to the coming races."
