McLaren will look to build on its encouraging performance in Barcelona as the team introduces a series of updates to the MCL40 ahead of this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix. The Woking-based outfit returned to the podium in Spain after a difficult run of races in Monaco and Canada, and has now confirmed several refinements aimed at improving the car’s overall performance at the
Red Bull Ring.
In a statement released ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix, McLaren confirmed it will introduce updates to the rear corners of the MCL40, while also evaluating an experimental rear wing during Friday’s free practice sessions.
“A week back at the McLaren Factory in Woking has provided the team with valuable time to analyse the extensive data gathered across recent races, helping to strengthen the understanding of the MCL40 and support continued development throughout the season,” the team statement read.
“As part of this continued momentum, the team will deliver minor detail refinements on the MCL40’s rear corners. In addition, we will test an experimental rear wing throughout Friday’s Free Practice sessions.”
The McLaren outfit also acknowledged the possibility of wet weather in Spielberg, viewing it as a valuable opportunity to further understand the current generation of cars and power units in low-grip conditions.
“This weekend’s track action in Spielberg also presents the potential challenge of running in wet conditions. However, this can be seen as a valuable opportunity to learn more about the new generation of cars and power units, with limited wet-weather running completed so far this year.”
“Should the weather prove changeable in Austria, the weekend could become an important development exercise throughout the race event. Any wet running would give the team the chance to accelerate its understanding of both car and power unit behaviour in low-grip conditions, helping to optimise overall performance as the 2026 season progresses.”
McLaren’s decision to bring updates to Austria follows a similar move by Red Bull Racing, with
team principal Laurent Mekies previously confirming that the Milton Keynes outfit would arrive in Spielberg with a significantly revised package.
McLaren chief on Austrian GP updates
McLaren Technical Director Neil Houldey also shared his thoughts ahead of the race weekend. The British engineer noted that the Austrian circuit has traditionally suited the team and expressed confidence that the trend could continue this year.
Houldey also explained that the latest refinements are expected to deliver additional performance and lap time, while emphasising that they form part of McLaren’s long-term development programme.
“Austria has historically been a strong track for us, and while we take nothing for granted in such a tight field, we are optimistic that the car and driver characteristics will again suit the circuit, putting us in the fight at the front. We’re always looking to make refinements that add performance and lap time to the car. For this event, we’ve focused on minor detail updates around the car’s rear corners, as well as an experimental rear wing that will run throughout Friday’s sessions.”
“While the overall package is lighter than some of our recent updates, these developments are all part of our season-long development pathway, and we’re continuing to look for every lap-time opportunity wherever we can.”
