With Gianpiero Lambiase joining McLaren no later than 2028, Max Verstappen's key ally is set to leave Red Bull Racing. The two went through a lot together, and became inseparable, they explained multiple times. Together with the duo of Lewis Hamilton and Peter Bonnington 'Bono', Verstappen and 'GP' are the most famous driver-race engineer partnership in
Formula 1, and the longest-standing one at the moment after Hamilton joined Ferrari.
In multiple interviews, they confirmed the strong bond working together created.
In 2021, speaking to Viaplay, when he was asked about GP's importance, Verstappen said: "I told him that I only work with him. As soon as he quits, I'll quit too. Yeah."

While they are often referred to as Formula 1's old married couple, Lambiase also sees a different dynamic.
In an interview together in the Talking Bull podcast, the race engineer said three years ago. "I think 2021 was so intense, I think... the relationship and the bond was cemented that year, and then last year and this year's just been a continuation of that. And yeah, I see him as my little brother."
GP's emotional radio message after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
Throughout the 2025 season, Lambiase had to miss multiple race weekends due to personal issues.
After Verstappen's stunning comeback, the Dutchman missed out on the drivers' title by just two points behind Lando Norris.
The race engineer had an emotional radio message after the conclusion of the race.
After the session, Verstappen said at the FIA press conference: "It’s been an emotional year. Forget about the results this year. I also don’t want to go too much into detail, but it’s been tough.
"But I’m very happy to be able to work with someone that passionate. Of course, he is my race engineer, but I see him as my friend. We have lived through so many emotional things together and fantastic achievements.
"I’m sure he was a bit emotional after the flag. So, I’m really looking forward to leaving here and catching up with him because it’s not been easy at times for him. I’m just very proud to be able to work with someone that good. A proper example of someone that never gave up this season, even through the difficult times."
