Helmut Marko has not been impressed with the pace of the 2018
McLaren despite them sitting above his Red Bull team in the Constructors’ standings after the first two races of the season.
Red Bull suffered an agonising double retirement within the first few laps in Bahrain, whereas McLaren came away from the Middle East with a second double points finish in as many races.
It is clear the Red Bull is a quicker race car than the McLaren, but we all know that reliability plays a major part in our sport.
However, it does seem unlikely that by the end of the season McLaren will still be above Red Bull, and Marko has reacted to Alonso’s recent comments about wanting to beat Red Bull, saying: “Mr Alonso wanted to attack Red Bull but he was behind Toro Rosso.
“The McLaren cannot be that great and it was not just the Honda engine that made them slow – they are still last on the straight with the Renault.” The Austrian does not sound happy with Alonso and will be desperate for Red Bull to pick up the pieces they left in Bahrain when the Chinese GP weekend gets underway on Friday.
