Marko: 'Another year like this and teams go bankrupt'

Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko does not think the future of Formula 1 is very bright if the current health situation does not improve quickly. He even predicts that some teams may collapse due to the pandemic.

The global coronavirus pandemic is leaving its mark all over the world, including within the royal class of motor racing. The smaller teams within Formula 1 have already reported financial problems. Haas, for example, is reported to be working with Nikita Mazepin, whose father is a multimillionaire, to complete the budget. Also, the news that Honda is leaving Formula 1 has to do with the financial consequences of the pandemic.

Marko therefore thinks that another year like this, without fans, with isolation and physical distance, will lead to bankruptcy for some teams. "The fact that we have been able to organise the world championship this year is very positive," he says in conversation with the Spanish site Soymotor.com. "But it is frustrating from an emotional point of view to see the empty paddock and the hidden faces behind the masks. That can't work in the long run. If it continues like this now, we won't last two seasons."
