Defending world champion Max Verstappen is currently in third place in the standings, trailing both McLaren drivers. With a 69-point deficit, a title defense seems to be a tough ask. Former world champion Nigel Mansell made his prediction about who will be crowned champion this year.
In a conversation with a betting site, Mansell named the McLaren drivers as the favorites for the world title. "I think they're going to have a great head-to-head battle all year but I think Lando will probably come out on top. Every time you win a race, you get more confidence and then you have to be very honest with yourself. Although you won the race, where could you have done better?"
"And if you're able to be honest with yourself even if you won the race, that you can improve, the next race you'll improve again," the 1992 world champion continued.

Mansell also saw that the two drivers are evenly matched. Currently, only eight points separate Piastri and Norris in the standings.
"Now they're so close in qualifying. The team's doing such a great job with supplying both drivers with exactly the same equipment and they are ahead of all the other teams. They don't have to worry about anybody, that's wonderful."
The Briton also had some kind words for McLaren's CEO Zak Brown, who according to him is 'on top of the situation'.
“I don't think the team harmony is a problem at all, because Zak is one of the coolest chiefs there is."
"If you are on top of something and you have already adapted to what is about to come around the corner, there are no surprises," he concluded.

Title chances for Verstappen and Red Bull

In the interview, Mansell did not mention the defending world champion at all being in contention for the title. On the other hand, top advisor Helmut Marko is yet to give up on Verstappen winning his fifth championship in the current season.
