Now that the situation regarding the COVID-19 coronavirus also deteriorated in the United States, it seemed inevitable that the Indianapolis 500 would be postponed. However, the organization stuck to the original date for a long time, but has now announced a new date.
Last week Formula 1 already postponed all Grands Prix until mid-June and worldwide the other sports are doing the same. The European Football Championship and the Olympic Games are good examples of this.
In the United States, however, they were not in such a hurry lately, because the virus only developed there later. The organisation of the Indy 500 held on to the traditional May month for a long time, but now that more than 75,000 infections have been diagnosed in the U.S., even the biggest race of the season has to take its place.

New date at the end of August

The organisation has immediately planned a new date: 23 August. The Indianapolis Grand Prix, which in recent years has been held one month before the Indy 500, should take place on July 4. Roger Penske, since this year owner of the IndyCar and the Indy 500, announces in a statement that they will do everything possible to make the 104th edition of the event even more beautiful.

"May is my favourite time of the year and like all fans I am very disappointed that we had to move the Indy 500. We are going to do our best in the coming months to give the customers an even better experience".
