Horner delighted after Baku: "This was exactly what we were looking for"

For the first time since Daniel Ricciardo's departure, Red Bull Racing had a strategically important second driver in Baku. Whereas Max Verstappen was often alone against the two Mercedes drivers, it was Lewis Hamilton who felt the frustration of not being able to get close to the leader thanks to Sergio Perez's great drive.

Perez exceeds expectations

That certainly hadn't escaped Christian Horner's notice either. The Red Bull team boss is therefore overjoyed with the Mexican. "We knew, given previous races here, that Sergio is extremely strong in Baku. But we couldn't have known how strong he really is. He was on top speed from the first practice session and only made a mistake in qualifying," Horner told Speedweek.com
Horner continued: "The way he controlled Lewis, that was top class. And we know what a first win with a new team does for a driver morally. He exceeded our expectations. At last we have two drivers who have something to say about podium finishes. You have one more arrow in your quiver when you know the second driver can also take a win. Two drivers who regularly score a lot of points, that's exactly what we were looking for."

New contract?

Is Red Bull Racing already thinking about a contract extension for Perez after his good performance in Baku, considering the Mexican is only on a one-year contract? "We still have plenty of time to answer that question. Sergio is doing great, just let him continue like that."
