Hamilton's radio frustration turns heads: 'I've never heard him so angry'

During the Dutch Grand Prix, Ferrari's strategy left Hamilton and Leclerc running close together despite being on different tyre strategies. Hamilton had more pace at that point of the race and repeatedly made his frustration clear over the radio as he remained stuck behind his teammate.

The situation became increasingly tense as the laps passed, with the Briton urging the pit wall to intervene and allow him through. By the time the two cars were separated through the pit-stop cycle, Hamilton had already lost valuable seconds, which ultimately hurt his chances of challenging George Russell for a place on the podium.

Speaking on the Up to Speed podcast, Coulthard admitted he has never seen Hamilton display such anger towards his own team before, pointing out how unusual it was to hear the seven-time world champion raise his voice and express his frustration so strongly over the radio.

Those few seconds lost behind Leclerc ultimately proved decisive, with Hamilton getting an opportunity to attack Russell in the closing stages before the VSC froze the positions and allowed the Mercedes driver to hold on to the final podium spot. Russell himself also followed team orders during the race, allowing his teammate through.

The day after his outburst, Hamilton publicly apologised to Ferrari and the team’s fans for his radio comments during the Dutch Grand Prix, explaining that his frustration had come from his determination to deliver a strong result for the Scuderia.

In a post shared on social media, the seven-time world champion acknowledged that it had been a difficult weekend for Ferrari, but highlighted the valuable points scored and the signs of progress within the team. Hamilton praised the work being carried out both at the factory and at the track, while admitting that Ferrari still need to improve, particularly over a single lap.

He also took responsibility for his comments, conceding that his frustration had got the better of him in the heat of the moment and promising to handle such situations better in the future. Despite the disappointment, Hamilton stressed that his belief in Ferrari and the direction of the project remains strong, insisting that the fight is far from over.
