Good news for Leclerc: Grid penalty avoided for now

Ferrari has opted to put a new combustion engine, MGU-K and MGU-H in Charles Leclerc's car. However, there will be no new turbocharger in the car for now, which would mean that no grid penalty would be hanging over the Monegasque's head in Canada. This is reported by Sky Sports.

Leclerc experienced last weekend in Azerbaijan certainly not a happy race weekend. The driver started from pole position in Baku but had to give up his front position to Sergio Perez in the first lap. After Carlos Sainz crashed out, he continued to suffer from engine problems and his race was over.

Behind the scenes, the Italian stable feared for a possible new turbo. Since Leclerc was already at the maximum number this season, this would mean that he would face a ten-place grid penalty this weekend. Dodging the penalty would mean that he could fight for victory more easily at the front.

According to Jenson Button it cannot be ruled out that the Italians will choose to go public later this weekend with the news that they will make use of a new turbo. For now, Ferrari will stick to the communicated changes.
