Russell on F1: 'Are as many as four drivers possible world champions'

George Russell believes he can become world champion in the future, just like several other drivers who have the talent but are not in the right car to fight for the honorary metal. So says the Mercedes driver during a press briefing with GPblog and others.
The young Briton was asked about the situation of compatriot Lando Norris, who, like himself, does not currently have a race-winning car. "It's tough for him. He is a fantastic driver, but it seems like his team is going backwards earlier compared to his first years with the team." Russell is in the same boat. The one-time race winner was expected to switch to a championship-winning team in Mercedes in 2022. After all, the German team had won all constructors' championships from 2014 to 2021. He eventually scored the team's only win that year in Brazil.

'Opportunities to come'

"That's how this sport works. Look at Charles Leclerc, for example. There are four or five drivers on the grid who deserve to be world champions, or at least to be able to fight for it," Russell stated. Nevertheless, the Mercedes driver remains confident. "We all just have to keep working hard, and our chances will come."
