There's a slight hint that the 2021 changes might force
Formula 1 teams to have a rookie sit in their car for two FP1 sessions during the season. But young
George Russell doesn't think this will be a good idea.
Russell, who is currently competing in his first Formula 1 season, was helped by
Force India who gave them their car during a few FP1 sessions as he worked his way up to a full-time seat. But Russell doesn't believe all the teams should be doing it.
"It's a great idea to try and give experience to young drivers. But personally, I don't think it's a good idea because going into an FP1 session for 20 laps, these rookie drivers are going to try and prove what they have," Russell told Racefans.net.
"You just can't do that without experience, so if anything it's just going to damage the driver's confidence more than doing good."
While he was fighting for the Formula 2 trophy, Russell was the reserve driver for
Mercedes last season. He says this role added to his fatigue.
"I was reserve driver for Mercedes last year so I knew what it’s like to go to a number of races, that’s probably the most fatiguing part of it," Russell added.
