Championship leader speaks out over likely MotoGP snub

The Spaniard is currently top of the second-tier standings, 32.5 points clear of Izan Guevara.

Usually, winning the Moto2 championship is a guarantee of graduation to MotoGP, but it appears as if Gonzalez has missed out.

Only two seats remain open for the premier class in 2027: at VR46 Racing and KTM Tech3.

Runaway WorldSBK leader Nicolo Bulega is expected to take the former, while Senna Agius is heavily rumoured to be heading to the latter.

Agius is also in Moto2, currently third in the standings, and three others fromthis years grid have booked MotoGP spots.

Guevara has signed with Pramac, while Dani Holgado (5th in the championship) has landed a spot at Gresini Racing, and David Alonso (6th in the championship) has signed a deal with Honda to race for either the factory team or LCR.

As such, Gonzalez finds himself in an unusual position, and has broken his silence on the matter.

“That question should be directed to the MotoGP teams,” he responded to MotoSan. “Ultimately, I go out on the track and try to prove that I'm a capable rider.

One reason for the likely snub is that Gonzalez is 24-years-old and in his sixth year in Moto2 when a title win would be expected.

Holgado (21) and Alonso (20) are far greener, in just their second years so may be seen to have more potential.

However, Guevara (22) and Agius (21) are in their fourth and fifth years in Moto2, and only have age on their side over Gonzalez.

There’s another factor too: four of the aforementioned riders are Spanish, while Agius is Australian and Alonso competes under the Colombian flag.

Not being Spanish is seen by some as an advantage when it comes to the over-dilution of sponsors, but Gonzalaez isn’t sure.

He added: “It's a topic that's been discussed for some time.

Finally, he indicated how impressive a title win would be given this year’s level of competition in Moto2.

He explained: “In all my time competing in this category, I think this is the year with the most riders capable of reaching the podium.
