Formula 2 cars will use 18-inch tyres starting from the 2020 season. Formula 1 cars will also get the 18-inch wheels, but not until the start of the 2021 season.
Pirelli says this will allow them to record more data and therefore be better prepared for their introduction in Formula 1 in time for the 2021 season.
"It's the closest championship to Formula 1 in terms of performance, I'm sure we can learn, it's good that we have that year of testing," said the head of Pirelli motorsport during a press conference in Spain.
"It's a big challenge because we will have to develop the Formula 2 tires in a very short time, we will do an intense testing program to provide a good product, Pirelli wants to support the pyramid of categories, we make tires from Formula 4 to Formula 1."
