The FIA have closed a loophole regarding oil burning occurring in qualifying. Ever since pre-season testing, it has been a big talking point, especially with the smoke from the Ferrari during its startup and general running.
The FIA has stated that teams cannot add oil or transfer it from an auxiliary oil tank to any part of the lubrication system in qualifying sessions.
FIA’s head of single seater technical matters Nikolas Tombazis said to teams:
“Following numerous discussion on the subject, we wish to clarify that in order to allow the FIA to monitor oil consumption during qualifying practice session in a precise and timely manner, no oil may be added to the car nor may any auxiliary oil tank be activated.”
“Exceptions to the above may, however, be granted on specific occasions following a request from the team concerned, any such exception will be made at the sole discretion of the FIA technical delegate.”
This clampdown makes it sound like some teams have been doing this, but according to sources, the FIA have introduced it as a precautionary measure preventing any teams from introducing it.
Keep all eyes on the Ferrari garage during startup next weekend!
