To encourage the flow of young talent into Formula 1, Ross Brawn is looking at the possibility of making it compulsory for all F1 teams to put a young driver in the car on a number of Fridays.
With limited time to test the car, Formula 1 teams generally choose to run the whole weekend with their regular drivers. Occasionally a driver is promoted, but in the case of Roy Nissany at Williams and Robert Kubica at Williams it is mainly because of the sponsor, not the talent of the driver.

Opportunities for young talent

According to The Race Ross Brawn has indicated that all Formula One teams will be required to field a young talent during a number of Fridays in 2022. For this, the F1 chief wants to establish a rule. However, it is still unclear how many practice sessions are involved and what the requirements are for this talent. According to Brawn the term 'Rookie' needs to be used very carefully.
At the end of 2020, this term was misused during Formula 1's Young Driver Test, where Robert Kubica and Fernando Alonso made their appearance. Brawn's aim is to give talented F2 and F3 drivers more opportunities to gain a few metres in an F1 car in order to stimulate their development.
