Fernando Alonso's contract for 2019 has been the story of the season. Is he staying in a McLaren, moving to a different team or switching to Indycar? Nobody seems to know anything, but could the change at McLaren today persuade him to stay?
Eric Boullier 'stepped down' this morning from his position at McLaren leaving a big hole to be filled ahead of their home race this weekend.
Two new roles have been created. A performance director and a sporting director. Those who fill these roles have been close to Alonso in the past.
Andrea Stella has been appointed as performance director. Stella has worked directly with Alonso particularly during his time at Ferrari where Stella was his race engineer. Just a quick youtube search brings up some of the conversations the pairing had on the team-radio.
In the other role, Gil de Ferran has stepped up. Ring any bells? During Alonso's time in America last year, De Ferran guided the Spaniard around mentoring him on how to perform at the Indy 500. The 2003 Indy500 winner has been in and around McLaren over the past few race weekends working as a consultant.
So will he stay? Has he himself had a major impact on the outcome of the first reshuffle? It's hard to tell. Perhaps McLaren have brought in these guys as a way of retaining their number 1 driver. Any interview with any McLaren team member is going to be worth a listen this weekend.
