Jacques Villeneuve could not understand why the FIA chose not to hand Franco Colapinto a penalty for the incident that left Oliver Bearman on the losing end at Suzuka. The 1996 world champion, speaking to
F1, believes the Argentine driver was fully responsible for a dangerous move in which Bearman had no chance to avoid the incident.
“I was surprised that nothing was done to Colapinto, because this is what you don’t want to see. A little move just as you approach the corner, in such a dangerous corner where he’s actually regenerating energy.”
He then added: “I guess now we’ve seen the danger of this new regulation, the difference in speed differential with some movements can be so dangerous. There’s nothing Oliver could do. And I don’t understand what Colapinto was thinking, moving at such a slow speed in such a dangerous place.”

Speaking to the media after the race,
Colapinto admitted he struggled to make sense of how the incident unfolded, describing the speed difference between the cars as extreme - almost as if one driver was on an out lap while the other was pushing flat out. He highlighted how unusual it felt, especially through a corner normally taken flat, which only made the situation more unpredictable.
He went on to explain that things become particularly sketchy when the straights are not completely straight, with cars still slightly turning, making the speed delta even harder to manage.
Looking in his mirrors, he saw Bearman spinning through the grass, yet still carrying enough momentum to go past, underlining just how significant the difference in speed was. While relieved that Bearman escaped without serious injury, he stressed that scenarios like this can become genuinely dangerous.
