The Cadillac Formula 1 team has announced that its inaugural F1 chassis will carry the designation MAC-26, standing for Mario Andretti Cadillac 26.
In a statement, the American outfit explained that the name was chosen to honour 1978 F1 World Champion Mario Andretti and recognise his enduring influence on the team’s formation and competitive ambitions. The announcement comes on the eve of Andretti’s 86th birthday, February 28.

Cadillac CEO reacts to chassis name

Team CEO Dan Towriss, in his reaction to the major announcement, detailed how the chassis is a reflection of Andretti’s spirit and the belief that an American outfit belongs on the F1 stage.
“Naming our first chassis MAC-26 reflects the spirit Mario carried into Formula 1 and the belief that an American team belongs on this stage. His story embodies the American dream and inspires how we approach building this team every day,” he said.
Team principal Graeme Lowdon also acknowledged the incredible personality Andretti possesses, before noting the influence he has had on the team’s journey to F1.
“Mario Andretti is a legend of Formula 1. A true racer who knows how to win and push the limits of what is possible. But more than that, he is an incredible man with a gentle heart who believes in everyone’s ability to shape their own path. At the start of my own journey with the team, he asked me not to let him down – I hope that he will be proud to see the Cadillac Formula 1 Team car bearing his name finally take to the grid.”
The Cadillac team, which makes its entrant into F1 this season, will see both Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas serve as its drivers, with Zhou Guanyu as its third driver and Colton Herta as test driver.
