British media praised Lewis Hamilton’s strong showing at the Australian Grand Prix, where he finished just shy of the podium while piling the pressure on his teammate. The
seven-time world champion made the most of Ferrari’s expected advantage off the line, launching from seventh to third by Turn 1, and despite losing some momentum, a couple of laps later, he ended behind the leading duo of Leclerc and Russell as the pair battled it out during the first stint of the race.
The sequence of VSC periods ultimately worked against him, costing him a position, but the final stint showed a Hamilton who was even quicker than the Monegasque on race pace, piling real pressure on him in the fight for the podium over the closing laps.
BBC
BBC highlighted a finally resurgent Hamilton after the struggles of his first season with Ferrari, noting that although he finished the race behind Leclerc, his performance in Melbourne was still a noteworthy one.
“The biggest thing to come out of this whole weekend is a brand new Lewis Hamilton, who was upbeat, who was positive almost all weekend. He finished behind his teammate, but that's not really the story of the weekend for them, because actually on a number of occasions, it was Lewis that was the lead Ferrari in terms of pace.
“Lewis suits this type of car a lot more than the ground effect era that he struggled so much, both at Mercedes and Ferrari. It may be that the tide is just turning and it's swinging back towards Lewis a little bit.”
The Guardian
The Guardian also highlighted the clear shift in the seven-time world champion, both in his approach on track and in his attitude in front of the microphones.
“After he endured a trying debut year with Ferrari Hamilton had closed 2025 somewhat jaded and disconsolate, having described it as a ‘nightmare’ season in which he failed to score a podium for the first time in his career.
“Having reset over the winter Hamilton returned eager to enjoy the fray again with the cars under the new regulations much more to his liking. In Melbourne they opened well and the seven-time champion also acknowledged that the team would analyse their strategic decision-making process.”
The Telegraph
The Telegraph devoted a lengthy piece entirely to the Briton, highlighting how he was quicker than his teammate in the final stint - something that rarely happened last year.
“Hamilton was always likely to enter this season with optimism. He is that type of person. Most teams and drivers begin the year with hope in their hearts, especially at the start of a regulations cycle, unless they have had a horrendous pre-season like Aston Martin or Williams, that is.
“Another boon is Hamilton’s performance. He was as close as he has ever been to a grand-prix podium with the Scuderia in 25 attempts and he believed he would have passed Leclerc, for third, with another five laps. Looking at the data, he may not have needed even that long.”
