Eric Boullier says that McLaren need to understand why they have such a gap in qualifying pace to the other Renault powered teams.
McLaren are yet to reach Q3 at any event this year, with both Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne being knocked out in Q2 at all three races so far this season.
The best qualifying session for the Woking based team was at the season opener in Melbourne, where due to Valtteri Bottas’ grid penalty, Alonso started P10 with Vandoorne just behind in P11.
McLaren have however scored points in every race, and Alonso sits sixth in the standings, with the team fourth in the Constructors’ standings.
However, it is expected that they will be overtaken by Renault, and Boullier wants to find out why McLaren are slower than other Renault powered cars.
“Obviously we have the same engine as Renault and Red Bull and we are behind so there is no hiding that fact,” he said. “We need to find out why we are slow in qualifying, why we are better in the race and why we are behind the other Renault teams, full stop.”
