Jorge Martin's decision to ride through his broken wrist again looked questionable with the Aprilia rider 2.6 seconds behind title rival Marc Marquez.
MotoGP riders' championship leader Marquez topped the timesheets in timed practice at the Malaysian Grand Prix, following up his fastest time in FP1.
He did, however, crash at the start of the session, but avoided injury and was able to continue on a second bike.
Martin, meanwhile, was last in the timed session, having been third slowest in FP1 as he races through a broken wrist sustained just six days ago at the Australian Grand Prix.

The 2024 champion only completed a few laps before abandoning the timed session early.
As a result of his difficult Friday, he will have to take part in Q1, where the fastest two riders will then compete with the top 10 in Q2.
Yet he did have some good news, with MotoGP doctor Angel Charte clearing him for the remainder of the weekend.
Raul Fernandez wasn't so lucky as his weekend was declared over as a result of an ongoing finger injury.
The third man in the title battle, Martin's Aprilia teammate Marco Bezzecchi, could only muster sixth after a decent second in FP1.

There were huge surprises elsewhere as Tech3's Maverick Vinales went eighth fastest, making Q2 for the first time in over a year.
Joan Mir also made the top 10 after a three-race absence, and he was joined by Franco Morbidelli who has hugely struggled in his final MotoGP season.
