Aston Martin boss explains why Alonso needed time before signing new deal

Aston Martin team principal Mike Krack says Fernando Alonso's contract extension is a boost for the team, after the Spaniard extended his future despite his displeasure with the current regulations.
It was announced earlier this week that Alonso would remain an Aston Martin driver in 2027 alongside Lance Stroll, after some rumours that he could retire from the sport. Instead, he will give Aston Martin another shot and drive for them in a year where he turns 46-years-old.
Krack explained that Alonso deserved 'time' to decide on his future and is happy that the two parties came to the conclusion of a new deal.
Ahead of this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, Krack was asked whether there was ever any 'serious question marks' over Alonso's future. He replied: "No. I You know, if contracts run out, you you always have question marks, obviously. And then, you know, for Fernando, it was also the question, does he want to continue? And I said too many times when you have when you have someone with with that track record, with that experience, you have to respect the the the request for time.
"I think it's not a secret that he's not so happy with regulations. He wanted to see how how that goes. So all in all, there has always been talks, and I think, you know, we are we are really happy that we came to to the conclusion."

He added: "The fact that both drivers continue with us shows their trust and commitment in the team and its possibilities. I think the signature gives a good sign, strong signal to everybody. And I think we went through really tough times, especially at the beginning of the project where we could almost not drive."

Alonso explains decision to remain with Aston Martin

Alonso originally said that he would make his decision during the summer break, but it took longer than expected. Meanwhile, Aston Martin was willing to wait for the former two-time world champion, as Chief Trackside Officer Mike Krack said on multiple occasions.
Alonso said: "I'm very happy to sign a new contract with Aston Martin Aramco. I took my time to make this decision, but racing is my life, my passion, and I know I still have the speed and determination to compete at the highest level. I'm committed for the long term with this team and to helping us succeed.
"I truly believe in what we are building: we have strong leadership, incredible people, partners and facilities. I look forward to making more memories on the racetrack in front of the passionate fans. Their energy creates an atmosphere that inspires me and is what makes our sport special."
