Red Bull Racing may have inadvertently given themselves another headache when it comes to their drivers’ extracurricular activities.
The Austrian outfit are already having to schedule Max Verstappen’s ventures to GT3 endurance racing, and now have Arvid Lindblad wanting a shot at rally.
The British Formula 1 driver was one of Red Bull’s representatives at the Goodwood Festival of Speed along with Isack Hadjar and Yuki Tsunoda.
Fans will have been delighted to see Racing Bulls’ Lindblad, given his mighty impressive start to life in F1, 11th in the standings in his debut season with 20 points.
However, unlike the usual for an F1 driver at Goodwood, the 18-year-old was far less interested in the iconic hillclimb, and instead the rally circuit at the top of the track.

Arvid Lindblad discovers a love for rally driving

Speaking after a lap with World Rally Championship driver Jon Armstrong, Lindblad admitted he’s got a new love outside of his day job while speaking to the Goodwood broadcast:
“It was my first time doing anything like that. We drive pretty quick but I’ve never been… (laughs). I wouldn’t say scared, but I was very much outside my comfort zone, I was very taken aback.

“It was just amazing to experience it, it’s so different to what we’re used to, and to get an appreciation for these guys, it’s so different and so much fun.
“It’s something I’ve been learning more about, I’ve actually become more fond of rally recently and it’s something I’d actually like to pursue once I’m done with my current endeavours.
“So definitely after having my first little taste of it I have more of an appreciation for what these guys do because the camera, the on-board, doesn’t really show it.
“It’s amazing, it’s so quick, it’s so close to the trees, the hedges, it’s fast and it’s really impressive.”

Northern Irishman Armstrong was also asked for his take on Lindblad’s start to the F1 season and gave a thoughtful response:
“It’s incredible, I think F1 drivers have a tough time because you come in and have to prove your point straight away which isn’t always easy.
“You have to learn against a lot of experience and you’re based on the car you get into and you have to punch above your weight and he’s definitely been doing that.”
While Lindblad seemed to suggest that his rally plans won’t come until after his F1 career, that’s very much not the case for Verstappen.

The four-time world champion made his GT3 debut at the Nurburgring last year, and then returned to win weeks later, making him the first reigning F1 champion to compete in another series since Keke Rosberg in 1983.
With Red Bull out of the F1 title fight this season, he's been back for more, and it appears they have little negotiation power when it comes to what Verstappen does outside of the sport.
On top of his team’s lack of pace, he’s also not a fan of the new 2026 regulations and the reliance on battery power.

Max Verstappen continues to pursue racing beyond Formula 1

With rumours rife of a team switch or sabbatical next season, the Dutchman talked up racing in other series after his last Nurburgring experience:
"It's just reminding me what real motorsport is like. I jump out of the car and I'm happy, and that's what I'm trying to chase, instead of coming out of the car and ... not feeling frustrated, but just a bit disappointed, I would say.
"I've been watching it already for a long time. In the beginning in F1, of course, I wanted to have the success and I wanted to win. That was definitely my pure focus. But now I can do a bit more around it. This was actually the first real possibility to do it.
"They [Red Bull] saw how passionate I am about it, so it wasn't hard to convince them.”
He added: “It's a bit more old school. It's still nice to see the passionate fans -- they can basically touch the car in the paddock because they can get so close. Yeah, it's a bit different, different vibes, but I like it.

"It's just going a bit more back to how I grew up in racing. There are professional teams but you also have amateur teams, and everything just races together. They're all there for the love of motorsport, I would say.
"It just shows that my love, it's not only around Formula 1. I love racing. I love competing. Just going back to a bit more old-school, proper racing, that's what I'm trying to seek. And that's what I get from driving at the Nordschleife."
