As the session progressed, it became clear Alpine would have a hard time advancing to the next session of qualifying.
Pierre Gasly, placed P19 at the time, would go out on track to try and find a ticket into Q2.
Nevertheless, the Frenchman found himself oversteering out of Turn 3 and shooting past his braking point into 4, sending him wide and deep into the run off straight on.

Franco Colapinto, also on a fast lap trying to get out of the drop zone, was coming up behind Gasly, and got caught out by the image of the stricken Alpine car.
Coming out of Turn 4, Colapinto lost the control of his A525 and found the wall, bringing out the third red flag of the day, following Alexander Albon's and Nico Hulkenberg's crashes.
