Fernando Alonso had a cheeky response when asked about the rumours linking Max Verstappen with McLaren and whether he would join the Dutchman in the Woking-based outfit's Hypercar programme next year. Ahead of the British Grand Prix, according to Sky Sports News,
Verstappen's camp has held a meeting with McLaren, with the British medium understanding that the discussions were initiated by Verstappen's representatives.
Answering GPblog's question about teaming up with Verstappen in the Hypercar class of the FIA World Endurance Championship at the Woking-based team, Alonso laughed: "I don't know if Zak has the budget. I will speak with him."
He added: "No, it's unlikely. I think, especially if I stay with the team, having the Valkyrie at Le Mans, if I do it... There is a very high chance that I do it with the Valkyrie first."
Fernando Alonso on his future
Previously, Alonso explained that he will decide on his future during the summer break, but also underlined that he will continue to work with the
Aston Martin team no matter what.
The former two-time world champion added: "I wish I do it (the Camino de Santiago, ed.) one day, but it will not be exactly right after retirement because, yes, especially now with my son being three months old, I cannot think about going three weeks of walking around Spain and all with him. So, yeah, I will have to wait a couple of years, but I have definitely some challenges ahead.
"Most of them are motorsport related. I want to win Dakar, as I said many times. I may want to win different things or challenge myself in endurance racing again, especially if Max wants to do it one day as well. When I stop racing, I said, I would like to continue with this team in a different role, try to help. I've been in Formula 1 26 years now and I think I can help the team. I'm probably the second or third most experienced guy in the team at the moment. I think there are things that can be useful for the team and I prefer to use those expertise than being at home watching TV."
