Adrian Newey had a stifling helmet on while speaking about driving his RB17 hypercar for the first time, but his emotion still came through loud and clear.
The Aston Martin technical director made a return to former team Red Bull to finally give the V10 monster its first public outing.
He did so at the most iconic of locations, the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Speaking after a successful hill-climb, he told Goodwood’s broadcast:

Adrian Newey describes first RB17 drive as 'very special'

“It’s an incredibly special moment, it’s been a long time in the planning, I think I did my very first steps with the car over Christmas in 2020 going into 2021 so it’s been a long time in gestation, but the guys and girls back at the factory they’ve done a really amazing accomplished job to get it here and it’s really special to have the car here and drive it up the hill for the first time.
“Yeah it is [a pre production model] the active suspension isn’t working, the fans are only cooling not generating downforce as well, some of the other active systems aren’t calibrated yet, so this is kind of, get the power out, get it running, it only ran for the first time three weeks ago so to pull it together and for it to work first time out of the box and be here is very special.
“I’ve really enjoyed it actually it’s very special.”
Newey began designing the car six-and-a-half years ago while in the midst of his legendary designer run at Red Bull that garnered seven drivers’ championships and six constructors' championships.

RB17 specifications and Goodwood driver lineup

Due to his legacy as likely the greatest car designer the sport has ever seen, he was given the freedom to start planning the RB17.
The hypercar features a 4.5-litre Cosworth V10 engine that produces 1,000bhp and revs to 15,000rpm. The exhaust has been tuned to replicate the legendary McLaren-Mercedes MP4/15.
After Newey, Red Bull F1 driver Isack Hadjar will take the car for a spin, followed by the man he replaced, Yuki Tsunoda, and also Red Bull Academy driver Alisha Palmowski.
